A MONARCH CATERPILLAR IS BORN  !!!

Female Monarch butterflies fly north in the spring and deposit 400 eggs, one to the underside of each milkweed plant leaf

The tiny cream colored egg is the size of a pin head

Watch the egg change color to grey

In about one week a black, yellow and white Monarch caterpillar will emerge by chewing a hole in the egg shell

It is about 1/8 th of an inch long

In two weeks it will eat 2,700 times it weight and measure two inches long

Its BIG appetite causes it to eat an entire milkweed leaf in approx 5 minutes !

A poison in the milkweed plant protects the Monarch butterfly from being eaten by birds

Monarch caterpillars have 12 small eyes
