DEAR STUDENTS & " MONARCH HEROES":
THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION ON THE
HOME PAGE IS.....MONARCH BUTTERFLIES HAVE APPROXIMATELY ONE MILLION
SCALES ON each of THE FOUR PARTS OF THEIR WINGS. EACH SCALE IS
FILLED WITH AIR SO THEY CAN FLOAT AND FLY EASIER !
MS. BOONE
Scientists
who study butterflies are known as entomologists. It is believed that
approximately one million Western Monarch butterflies return each year to
spend six months of the winter in habitats located only on the Central
Coast of California. They are the largest and the only major regular
over-wintering habitats in the world of the Western Monarch butterfly. The
number of Monarch butterflies returning ( migrating ) each
year continues to decline. Monarchs can fly an estimated 10 to 30 miles an
hour and 80 to 100 miles in a single day. They travel from as far away as
Canada; a two thousand mile trip back to the same winter homes. Plan a school field trip to see the huge "clusters" of
Monarch's covering the limbs of Pine, Cyprus and Eucalyptus trees.
