About the author: Sheila Boone, 5th Great Granddaughter and direct
descendant of Daniel Boone, is carrying on the pioneer Boone spirit by
devoting her life to bringing attention to the cause of saving the migratory
Western Monarch on California’s coast. Growing up by the Alsea River on
the
Oregon Coast, close to where the pioneer family settled, Sheila has always
been a wild life photographer and naturalist. She has dreamed of a book
about the Monarch for very young children, but never dreamed that the
inspiration for such a book would be her own. She is excited that FREE AS
A
BUTTERFLY will fulfill part of her dream of bringing children closer to
nature as well as a beginning concept of freedom. Sheila is thrilled to
have
three children and five grandchildren to carry on the Boone family tradition.
A message, linked to the book's title, graces the image of the
world,
illustrated on the back cover. “May the wings of the world soar with
peace
and hope and a spirit as ‘free as a butterfly.' ”
About the illustrator: Susi Grell is a native of Montreal, and earned her
degree in illustration from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. Teaming
once again with Images Press (MALINDA MARTHA AND HER SKIPPING STONES ’99 and
SERENDIPITY SAYS...’OO) Susi captures Sheila’s Boone’s story of the
Monarch’s life cycle and migratory phenomenon of the Western Monarch with a
special eye for young children. Susi shares the wonder of America’s
Monarch
with her husband, James.
